USOC Statement Regarding Incident on Saturday, August 9
August 09, 2008
The United States Olympic Committee has learned of an incident that occurred earlier today involving two family members of a coach for the United States Olympic Men's Indoor Volleyball Team.
While at the Drum Tower in central Beijing, the two family members were stabbed during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant. One of the family members was killed and the other seriously injured.
Following the attack, the assailant took his own life.
Our priority in this hour is to attend to the needs of the family members, the U.S. Olympic Men's Indoor Volleyball Team and Staff, and the entire U.S. Olympic Delegation. In addition, the USOC is working closely with the United States Embassy, United States law enforcement authorities and local law enforcement authorities.

I am a resident of Lakeville, MN (where the Bachmans live), and a frequent customer of Bachmans Flowers. I wish to send the Bachman family my family's sincerest condolences in the loss of Mr. Bachman and the injuries of Mrs. Bachman. I was shocked and distressed to hear the news, and as I heard the news on the radio a Bachman's Van was right behind me as I was driving. I was moved to tears and my heart ached for the family. I wish the Bachman family the best, and they are in my thoughts & prayers. Sincerely, The Pirkl Family

Prayers goes out to the victims, family members, even to the assailant and his family. Truly, we are a long way from peace. May God show mercy, and give us the strength to continue on.

Words cannot express the horror and shock of this event. I do not know the Bachmans personally; but have lived over 40 years in the community to which they have contributed their florist business which has brought joy and comfort to so many; their service to the community; and their philanthropic giving that has benefitted so many. My heart goes out to the family, the members of Team USA, and all who have known and loved this dear family. Team USA, do us proud! The greatest honor to this family is to overcome the grief, at least just for now.
