Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Movement
This week marks the one hundred and forty-sixth anniversary of the birth of Pierre de Coubertin, a visionary who would go on to become the founder of the modern Olympic movement. Coubertin was born in Paris in 1863. At an early age he surmised that organized sport was essential to the education and development of young people. Later in life as an educator and historian, Coubertin's conviction to sport and a fascination with the ancient Olympic Games led him to establish the International Olympic Committee and the modern Olympic movement.
"Amazing Moments in Olympic History" will be published every Wednesday on teamusa.org. Check back weekly to see more landmark achievements and incredible feats in the history of Team USA and the Olympic Movement.
